Origin and function of a mandala
Mandala yoga mat
Mandalas are present in many civilizations.
The word "mandala" means "circle" in Sanskrit. According to mandala artist Charles Gilchrist, creator of "sacred geometry", a wandering guru may have brought the first meditation mandalas to the Tibet around the eighth century. Mandalas have been found throughout the Far East, and Native American symbolism is based on the "sacred circle". Mandalas are believed to be of Eastern origin, but it would be difficult, if not impossible, to find a civilization that was unaware of the circle symbolism and its potential for spiritual self-examination.
A mandala is a symbol of the universe in its ideal form, and its creation signifies the transformation of a universe of suffering into a universe of joy.It is also used as an aid to meditation, connecting the meditator to the best part of themselves by opening the way to the perfect self
The circles of a mandala always bring attention back to its center which is here Ohm symbol.
Achamana's note
The cushioning of a thick yoga mat with added balance
In a group lesson, in the middle of all the other students and practitioners, a carpet delimits your space. It is a pre-square in which you can focus exclusively on yourself by findingconcentration and breath. This is where the notion of comfort and connected universe comes in.
Comfort for not having:
Subjects of disconcentration such as the risk of slipping or falling.
Knees or ankles struggling.
Blockages in the sequences of postures or in the alignment due to material that is too sticky.
Imbalance and instability on a material that is not dense enough such as the EVA foam usually used in gymnastics, fitness and pilates.
In floor positions, a good mat should not be too thin or too thick. It should give light dense cushioning with the feeling of being on a futon. Just comfortable enough, while feeling every part of your body.
Connected universe and sacred space: to facilitate meditation, the path to your inner Self. The more you have practiced and meditated on your mat, in the energy of your mandala, the faster the connection will be made each time you unroll your mat.
