It is also called Pranav because the sound of "Om" or "AUM" comes from Prana (vital vibration, White Light which is in everything, in all life. The Vyahrities - Bhur, Bhuvah, Svah

The above three words of the Gayatri, which literally means "past", "present" and "future", are called Vyahrities. Vyahriti is the one who gives knowledge of the entire cosmos or "ahriti". The scripture says: "Visheshenh Aahritih sarva viraat, praahlaanam prakashokaranh vyahritih". Thus, by pronouncing these three words, the person who sings it contemplates the Glory of God which illumines the three worlds or regions of experience.

The remaining words

1. Tat - In simpler terms it means "this or that", as it is a description by speech or language, the "Ultimate Reality" cannot be described by any words
2. Savitur - "Divine Sun" (The Ultimate Light of Wisdom)
3. Varenium - "Adore
4. Bhargo - "Enlightenment
5. Devasya - "Divine Grace"
6. Dheemahi - "We Contemplate"
7. Dhi - "The Intellect"
8. Yo - "Who"
9. No - "Ours".
10. Prachodayat - "Ask/Use/Pray"

The last five words constitute the prayer for final liberation through the awakening of our true intelligence.

Gayatri Mantra is sung all over the world. "OM Bhur bhuva svaha Tat savitur varenyam Bhargo devasaya dhimahi Dhiyo yo naha prachodayat."

Literally translated: "Let us behold the radiant source of all light. May our minds merge therein and thus awaken our perception in the levels - physical, vital and mental."
